The Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah is grateful for the support we received during the 2022 Season by tour participants and we are currently accepting online tour bookings for the month of May and June.  Stay tuned for future summer tour dates!

Description:

The Sheguiandah Archaeological Site is a nationally, designated multi-component Heritage Site. This site was utilized by the Anishinabek (Odawa and Ojibwa) and earlier Indigenous cultures including Woodland, Archaic and Paleo-indigenous; both as a quarry for mining the glassy Bar River quartzite for stone tools, and camping, fishing, hunting, and gathering around Sheguiandah Bay.

The Town of NEMI is extremely grateful for the support we received for guided tours throughout Summer and Fall 2022 and we look forward to welcoming you back and providing you with more guided tours this 2023 Season and are now currently taking tour bookings online for May 2023. Please stay tuned for future tours this Summer Season!!

What you need to Know:  

As the Sheguiandah Archaeological Site is a protected, designated, National Historic Site, admittance to the site is ONLY permitted through participation in a guided tour provided by the Town of NEMI. 

All participants must pre-register and pay for their tour in advance, via the online booking site which can be found by visiting: https://shegsite.com/booking/ .
Included with your tour fee, is same day admission to the Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah.

For Group Tour Bookings (10-12 people), please contact hferguson@townofnemi.on.ca or (705) 368-2367 to book your tour! Group tours (10-12 people) receive a 20% discount at the time of booking.  

CANCELLATION POLICY
We recognize that life happens and plans change! Please be advised that if you need to cancel your tour due to unforeseen circumstances, we will accept cancellations to tour bookings up to 24-hours in advance to your tour date and a full refund will be issued.

The Town of NEMI as the property owner, and therefore is responsible for ensuring the overall protection and conservation of this unique, heritage site. We ask that everyone please be respectful and adhere to the site’s rules. 

Tour Rules and Participant Code of Conduct:

  1. Prior to the commencement of the tour, all participants must sign a Participant Waiver, which indemnifies the Town of NEMI, its staff and volunteers from liability. 
  2. To ensure the best experience possible, tour groups are limited to a maximum of twelve people per tour.
  3. Please ensure that you dress according to the weather conditions and wear proper footwear (such as running shoes or hiking shoes/boots).
  4. We ask that you please be respectful and stay on the trail. 
  5. Photographs are permitted, however we do ask that you please refrain from recording the tour.
  6. Please only take memories and photos home with you. The Sheguiandah Archaeological Site and its’ ancient artifacts are protected under the Ontario Heritage Act and it is a criminal offence remove artifacts or loot artifacts from a heritage/historic site. Anyone caught doing so, will be reported to the Ontario Provincial Police and face charges under the Ontario Heritage Act.
  7. We remind participants to please be respectful of our tour guides and other participants. Please be advised that disrespectful and abusive behavior will not be tolerated. 
  8. Our tour guides always welcome and encourage questions. We will provide ample opportunities for questions throughout the tour.  Our tour guides will do their best to ensure that every question is answered, or we will find the answer to your question.
  9. If at any time throughout the tour you require a break or feel unwell, please make our Tour Guides aware. In case of a medical emergency, our Tour Guides carry a backpack of supplies including a first aid kit and cell phone.
  10. Please be advised that tours run rain or shine, unless we experience inclement weather, such as thunder, lightening or significant rainfall . If this is the case, your tour will be cancelled and you will receive a full- refund of your ticket price or the ability to re-schedule your tour.
  11. As hydration is important, we recommend that you bring a water bottle with you for the tour.

 

Trail Surface

Please be advised that the approximate total tour will be 2 hours in length. The trail surfaces are mixed, including a portion of graveled trail, followed by wooden boardwalk. The trail has several areas with a steep incline, and as such, it is critical that all participants ensure proper footwear is worn.

Washroom Facilities

There is access to washroom facilities, prior to tour commencement at the Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah.
